in the mid 1800's further developments in
candle making where seen. Paraffin
wax made from oil and coal shales enabled a new breed of
candles to be born. Processed by
distilling the residues left after crude petroleum was refined, the
bluish-white wax was found to burn cleanly, and with no unpleasant
odor. This paraffin wax, produced at a much lower cost, allowed for
the continued expansion of
candles. By this period in
our Nation's History, most
candles being manufactured
consisted of paraffin and stearic acid.
Pillar Candles
When burning a pillar candle for the
first time, it is important to give it a start. You should
burn the candle for 1 hour for each inch of its diameter. Example: a
candle 3" in diameter should be burned for three hours to establish
its burn pattern.
This will allow your pillar to
establish a full melt pool (Increasing the scent throw) and leave a
shell about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, so no wax can drip over the
sides. This helps you to enjoy your entire candle while saving your
candle from that dreaded dripping candle as well!
